At the time of the Protestant Reformation the
reformers were quickly
faced with the need to state their convictions (based on
the Bible) and
defend their beliefs and practices. In 1530 Emperor Charles
asked
Protestants to present such a statement to Roman Catholic representatives
gathering in the city of Augsburg.
Firmly committed to God’s truth, the
Protestants composed what is today
called the Augsburg Confession of Faith.
Here is a brief summary of the 28 Articles:
1. God is a Trinity: one God, yet three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
2. All people are by nature without true fear and love of God (sinners) and need the
new birth of Baptism.3. Jesus is the divine Son of God Who became true man to fulfill God’s demands in
our place.4. No one becomes righteous in God’s sight by human efforts: God gives forgiveness
through faith in Jesus Christ.5. Through the Word of God and the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper,
God moves people to saving faith.6. True faith will result in doing God’s will.
7. The church is people who believe in Jesus and among whom the Gospel and the
Sacraments are properly taught and practiced.8. Hypocrites do not destroy the church, since God’s Word - not people - is the power
which gives life to the church.9. Baptism is God’s pipeline for His Grace.
10. In the Bread and Wine of the Lord’s Supper, Christ gives His Body and Blood.
11. Confession of sins is to be practiced, though no one can know his sins entirely.
12. Repentance and forgiveness are part of the daily life of a Christian.
15. Church customs are for teaching and instruction: they are not to be matters
burdening consciences.16. Christians are to support their government with obedience unless there is conflict
with God’s will.17. Christ will return on the last day as judge of the world.
18. Man has free will to perform human righteousness, but must have God’s help if he
is to perform God’s demands.19. Sin is the result of human disobedience to God. Man - not God - is the cause.
20. Man’s good works flow out of faith and gratitude. They do not earn salvation.
21. Christians are to honor saints of the past for their good example, but not to worship
them.24. Holy Communion is to be celebrated reverently for the strengthening of faith and
love toward God and man.26. Customs and rituals of the church, not commanded by God, are not essential to
Christianity.27. The Christian is called to live His faith in his daily life.
28. The church is not to rule the state; not make rules for men’s consciences unless
these already exist in God’s Word. All are welcome to join the fellowship at Redeemer, Gastonia.
